An 18th Century whaling station famous as the home of Captain Cook and his ship, the Endeavour which sailed forth in 1768. Captain James Cook was one of Whitby's most famous residents, his statue attracts many tourists and seagulls alike! There is a beautiful abbey situated on the cliff top for those who are willing to tackle the 199 steps which lead from the town up to the ruins. Whitby is a thriving fishing port as well as a seaside resort.
